Hi people
I am writing a blog about what it is like to have a deaf mum and stepdad. I am Alice Maine or Jones. I am 19 years old, my mum Suzie Jones went deaf when she was 5 years old and she has a cochlear implant. I am like an everyday girl really, I will not leave my mum in the house on her own as she is deaf and I panic when I know she is in the house on her own. People always say to me, Alice what is it like having a deaf mum, I always say back to them that it does not bother me as she is like every human but she’s just deaf.
She went out with someone called David Jones when they were at school, they left school and lost touch, then David came on Facebook and they met up. Soon after that, they got married, I have never really seen my mum this happy before.
I have ADHD and autism even though my mum is deaf she has been amazing and with a deaf mum you can’t really just say mum, you have to tap her then say what you want to say. She may miss lipread some words and get them wrong but that is deaf people for you. It makes it more fun to be around and what really gets me is people always think you are deaf, you sign. No, that is wrong, when you are deaf you don’t just sign, some people do but other people use lipreading. Deafness is not all about sign.
I love being around deaf people they all manage to put a smile on your face.
Anyways I just want to say thank you to everyone who took their time to read my blog and hope it makes sense. This is my life about having a deaf mum.

Nothing’s impossible. Alice can use good communication tactics with deaf people. It just takes patience and kindness.
